Bucharest – Brasov
Pick up from the Bucharest airport and if time permits, transfer to Brașov. Situated in the heart of the country, Brașov is one the most beautiful cities of Romania. Evening visit to the city for street photography followed by welcoming dinner in a restaurant with traditional Romanian dishes. Overnight at a beautiful hotel in the old center of the city.
Brașov – Cincșor
After breakfast we will take advance of the narrow streets of Brașov and the Council Square at the heart of this beautiful medieval city. We will also be able to admire and photograph the Black Church, which is the largest Gothic cathedral in Southeast Europe. Before lunch, we will leave Brașov and we will head towards Cincșor just in time for a good meal served by Chef Adrian. Here we will discover for the first time in Romania, the traditional architecture of Transylvania Saxons. We will see a fortified church and we will make a home visit to an authentic Saxon, who will tell us stories about local history. In the evening we could witness how traditional bread is made, bread that we can taste during dinner.
Cincșor – Drăguş – Lisa – Viscri
In the morning we will visit an artisan of Drăguş, a nearby village at the foot of the Transylvanian Alps, and we will be able to see and photograph the entire process of washing and weaving wool blankets in Lisa. Moving forward, we will cross Hârtibaciul Plateau, located in the heart of Tansylvania and arrive to Viscri, where we will spend the next two nights. We will be hosted in a Saxon traditional house, in this small remote village that is part of UNESCO World Heritage. If time permits in the evening we will spend some time on the village alleys waiting for the cows to return from pasture, an important part of the day in rural areas of Romania.
Viscri Village
We will start our day photographing the sunrise and the breathtaking hills around Viscri, after which we will pay a visit to the fortified church. Here we can climb in its tower to have a panoramic view over the village and its specific structure. Before lunch we will visit a blacksmith in the area and we can also photograph the traditional manufacturing of bricks. We will take lunch with the locals in order to get closer to them and to taste the dishes specific to this area. The entire evening we will spend it at a sheepfold and we will get there in a horse carriage. We will be able to see how the sheep are milked and how to prepare cheese in a traditional way.
Viscri – Sighișoara – Copșa Mare village
After breakfast we leave for the next destination of our journey, the beautiful area of Copșa Mare and Biertan village. On the way, we could make a short stop at Sighișoara, one of the few still inhabited medieval cities of Europe, included in UNESCO Heritage. We can take here street and architectural photography. We will serve lunch right in the house where is believed that Vlad Țepeș (the ruler that inspire the Dracula myth) was born and spent his childhood, now converted into a museum and restaurant. In the evening we will spend time in Copșa Mare village, photographing the local people. We will stay for two nights in a Saxon medieval architectural complex, in Copșa Mică.
Copșa Mare village – Biertan
In the morning we will photograph the sunrise on the hills of Biertan having as a subject the fortified church, the largest church in Transylvania, also part of UNESCO Heritage. Afterwards we will spend some time with the locals and then we’re going to photograph several traditional craftsmen while working. We will be able to capture the process of painting icons on glass, making traditional felt slippers and the tradition of beekeeping and honey making. We will spend the evening with charcoal makers, a particularly interesting photogenic place, where we can see the traditional way of cooking coal.
Biertan – Gura Humorului
After a last sunrise spent on the Transylvanian hills, we will head to the next destination of our trip, Bucovina. The road takes us over the peaks of the Carpathian Mountains in the historical region of Moldova. We will take lunch in a beautiful scenery at Dracula Castle restaurant, located in the place where the writer Bram Stoker imagined the house of the famous vampire. After lunch we’ll continue towards Bucovina and we get in Gura Humorului, where we will be staying for three nights at a guesthouse in the area.
Gura Humorului – Sucevița – Gura Humorului
After the breakfast at the guesthouse we will head to Marginea village where we will visit and photograph the studio of a famous master potter. Here we can see the process of traditional pottery making. We will continue our journey with a visit to Sucevița Monastery, one of the painted monasteries, part of UNESCO Heritage, which has an interesting fortification. Near the guesthouse where we are staying there is the famous Voroneț Monastery, where we could admire the blue tones on the exterior painting, considered to be unique in the world. After lunch we will head towards Argel where we will let ourselves introduced in traditional Huțul music by a group of local musicians. The Huțul people are, perhaps, one of the least known ethnic minorities in Europe today. They’re well known as amazing craftsmen and musicians. After our amazing experiences we will head back to Gura Humorului where we will have dinner.
Gura Humorului – Moldovița – Gura Humorului
We start the day with a visit to Moldovița Monastery, also part of UNESCO Heritage, in order to listen the morning service. We will continue our adventure in Vatra Modoviței, in the workshop of a Huțul blacksmith and then with an artist who paints eggs. Painting eggs is part of Bucovina’s village Easter traditions. We will take lunch in a traditional way, with the shepherds, at a fold in the area. In the afternoon we visit another craftsman, a wood carver who manufactures also a unique traditional musical instrument called “bucium“.
Gura Humorului – Vișeul de Sus
From early morning we pack our bags and we head to Lucina, where we can admire and photograph a spectacular and unique breed of horses, Huțul, used especially for working in this mountain areas. Later on we will visit Ciocănești village with his extremely beautiful houses and then we will cross Prislop Pass. The road will bring us in another region of our itinerary, aramureș. We have a long road to go, but on the way we have several interesting mountain regions to pass. We will reach Vișeul de Sus, where we will check in a hotel train, recalling the journeys of the past. We will spend the evening in an unique setting having dinner in the dining wagon of the train.
Vișeul de Sus – Rohia
After breakfast we embark on a steam train for an unique experience, a journey made in time. This train represents the last forestry railway in the world that is still operational. During our train trip we can photograph freely the most photogenic places. We will visit and photograph the wood cutters while performing their daily routine (this activity must be related to certain days). We will continue our journey to discover Maramureș and in the afternoon we will get to Rohia, where we will spend the next three nights.
Rohia – Rogoz village
In the morning we go to photograph the sunrise on a hill in Rogoz village. We have the opportunity to see domestic buffaloes grazing on the hill into the morning mist. After a picnic breakfast we will visit the wooden church next to which we will have our meal, also included in UNESCO Heritage. We will continue our morning walking through the village and getting in contact with locals. After lunch we will go to meet a local musician who will introduce us to the mysteries of traditional songs of the region. We could also visit a sheepfold and witness traditional cheese preparation.
Rohia – Groșii Țibleșului village
In Maramureș, people are very hospitable and very often they invite you into their home, they serve you food and a glass of “horincă“, a traditional drink. We will fully experience their hospitability and we will enjoy photography on the villages that we visit. We will visit other craftsmen and we will be able to witness home work in the villages, such as gathering hay or other activities, all depending of the period you will visit. We will visit locals home and photograph the process of milking domestic buffaloes and how to look after them. In the evening we will go to Groșii Țibleșului village, where we can photograph old houses and meet the locals, know their stories and photograph them while working on their daily routine.
Cluj-Napoca Airport
This morning we can take advantage of a last sunrise on the land of aramureș and after breakfast we go to Cluj-Napoca, a larger town in this part of the country to take the flight to Bucharest.
